Senior Researcher – Artisanal and small scale mining

Job Post London

Jobs Administration

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a policy research organisation that provides expertise and leadership in researching and achieving sustainable development at the local, national, regional and global levels.

The Sustainable Markets Group at IIED is looking for a highly skilled individual to lead its work in artisanal and small scale mining (ASM).

IIED’s work on artisanal and small scale mining includes both research and a global programme of in-country dialogues on ASM. Research on ASM has looked to bring new evidence to an outdated discourse and frame ASM more squarely within the range of rural actors able to make a positive contribution to sustainable development. Our research has explored mechanisms that govern the sector (such as formalisation and labour policies) and the linkages between ASM and other rural livelihoods, such as agriculture. There is significant opportunity for an exceptional candidate to expand our research programme on ASM, including developing cross-Institute collaborations on key sustainable development issues such as land rights and the green economy. The post-holder will be responsible for developing and executing further research proposals, working with both internal and external stakeholders and identifying innovative research needs for the sector. We are therefore looking for someone with expertise to across the natural resource sectors, who has, at a minimum, an interest in ASM and able to apply their knowledge to the sector.

The post holder will also play a leading role on IIED’s policy dialogue series for ASM, which aims through dialogue to identify solutions for formalised, rights-based ASM within a more inclusive and responsible mining sector. IIED’s approach to dialogue is to foster multi-stakeholder collaboration to improve understanding, roles and relations between government, large- and small-scale mining, and other stakeholders. Fundamental to the success of this programme is highly effective stakeholder engagement within natural resources for development.

To succeed in this role you must have a postgraduate qualification in development or related fields. Demonstrable research, field and stakeholder engagement experience that can be applied to ASM and sustainable development. A proven ability to develop new areas of research including experience in using research to influence private and/or public sector policy. A track record of fundraising as evidenced by successful research/project proposal applications to various funding agencies. For further information about the requirements of the role and how to apply please go to the jobs pages of the IIED website (
