The Careers & Enterprise Company was announced by Nicky Morgan in December 2014 with £20m of initial government funding. It has been set up to play an umbrella, coordinating role in the confusing landscape of careers and enterprise, supporting schools and colleges across England (age 12-18). Its role is to inspire and prepare young people for the fast changing world of work. Christine Hodgson, chairman of Capgemini, was named as chairman and it was established as a CIC, independent of government. Other board members include Lord Young, former Enterprise Adviser to the Prime Minister, Steve Holliday, Chief Executive of National Grid plc, Brian Lightman, former General Secretary of ASCL and Dame Julia Cleverdon DCVO, CBE, Vice President of Business in the Community and Special Adviser to The Prince’s Charities. The company is led by Claudia Harris, CEO and former partner at McKinsey.
As the Chief of Operating Officer you will be a core part of the senior leadership team, reporting to the CEO, offering guidance and advice, and deputising when required. You will be accountable for the day-to-day running of the company’s major delivery streams, as well as projects which allow the organisation to realise its objectives. As such, you will manage the Head of the Enterprise Adviser Network to ensure the successful roll-out of the Company’s on-the-ground programme. You will also be responsible for overseeing the delivery of programmes funded by the Company’s Careers & Enterprise Fund, and you will oversee the provision of impact reporting to ensure the Company’s actions are based on the most robust evidence, and that the Company monitors and assesses its impact accurately.
The successful candidate will have:
Experience of working in an operational leadership role in a business or organisation of analogous complexity and scale
Experience of managing a large team in the field, either directly, or of volunteers
Proven track record of delivering company strategy and its operations in a fast-paced environment with challenging delivery expectations
Proven track record of success in managing variety and complexity, including leading diverse work streams and functions
Experience of people management and organizational change
Demonstrable ability to set own strategies and goals to effectively contribute to organisational success
Experience of managing budgets and proven commercial acumen
Evidence of good planning and financial skills, with the ability to deliver on time and within budget
